What size backpack would you recommend? Should I bring a daypack as well?

I always take a 70-80 litre pack, but pack lightly as I figure I can just buy clothes as I need them since it’s so cheap.

Get a bag with a detachable day bag. I bought a Karrimor 70-90 or whatever before I left with a zip off day pack and it was out-fucking-standing, but probably a little big for most folks just backpacking. Definitely don’t fuck up and get one without a zip-off day pack though. You’ll use that fucker every day.

One with a detachable rucksack part is very handy, as you’ll want something smaller to carry around while out and about. Most backpacks will have a section for wet/dirty clothes in the bottom. One with a decent cross chest strap is a must too, and mine let me fold all the back straps into a cover and carry it like a suitcase, although admittedly I never used that.

As for backpacks - get something smaller. Around the 35-45 litre mark. You don’t want to be carrying more than that. Get a proper hiking backpack in decent condition. This is one of the few essential purchases that will influence your daily comfort so don’t skimp too much on it. A friend I was travelling with have an old piece of shit rucksack and it was a nightmare and she found it really uncomfortable. Also, a good rucksack will last you a long time if you want to go away again.
That said, you don’t need anything too fancy. Sturdy, comfortable and with good back support and 2 or 3 compartments. Ones with a zip off section are also pretty handy so you can use it as a day bag.
