You can get them (a prepaid SIM card) in one of the many mobile phone shops you will encounter. An Orange SIM will cost you a massive 200 THB ($5 USD) and includes 100 THB credit. Refills are 50 or 75 THB (only valid for 3 days from activation) or 100 or 300 THB. refills are available all over the place, including 7-11

DTAC is a bigger company and has better coverage outside Bangkok. I am not sure of the price, but I guess 300-400 THB for the card. Refills are the same. An interesting promotion they offer is with the Happy SIM which offers a translation service at no extra charge. But I am not familiar with the details.

Write your phone numbers down before you do that. The guy in the phone shop reset my whole phone, fuck knows why and I lost all my numbers and ringtones.

There was a rumor that you’re supposed to register your SIM card within some time period or they deactivate it. Apparently it’s not a rumor after all, but I’ve never heard of anyone having one deactivated so I reckon it works like most Thai laws - selectively.
