I’m looking to buy a mobile phone in Bangkok. I know a few places like Fortune City, MBK and another place by the Victory Monument. Is it worth going around to all the different shopping malls to compare prices or all they all pretty much the same?

The consensus seems to be that MBK is the best place to shop for one. If you’re still in the US, I have a feeling it might be cheaper to buy an unlocked GSM phone there and get a Thai SIM card when you get here. Electronics seem to always be more expensive here, I don’t see why phones would be any exception. I’ve been wanting to buy a Treo 650 (or anything Smartphone-ish with Palm OS), but haven’t gone shopping for one yet. Actually, if you could bring me one I’d pay you for it, and you could have my old Samsung.

I picked up my shitty Motorola Hand Grenade phone for 1200 THB with a SIM card, I don’t think I could beat that with an American phone.

I would recommend that you do Siam Parragon, Siam Centre, Siam Discovery and MBK at the same time. You’ll see the complete range of shopping experiences within walking distance of each other. Pick up a SIM package from the True store in Siam Discovery or at a 7-11. It’s currently only 99 THB for a starter package for True.

Go to MBK (although you can really get them everywhere). MBK has floors dedicated to cell phones. It’s one of the cheaper place. There is also another place called Plantip Plaza that has lots of computer components. I paid around $40-45 USD for my cell phone with a Thai SIM card.
