Where can I buy a tailored suit and what is the quality like?

If you plan on going to Vietnam I would suggest buying your suits in Hoi An. The quality in my opinion (I’m no expert) was a bit better than the Khao San rd crap variety and the prices were cheaper. If you do go to Bangkok, stay the hell away from tailors on Khao San.

Yes you can buy a . And shirts, lots of shirts. All my stuff is excellent so far, though a bit pricy for Bangkok I think. I use Khun Saak, from Hong Kong I think, at GMC Style. He’s on the second floor of Amarin Plaza at Chit Lom BTS station (walk east out of the train, second exit on the north side). You can find cheaper, but he’s very good and reliable. Found him from a thread at Thai Visa and bought about 15 shirts and a suit from him over 6 months. Like spog said, avoid the people who hawk or who look cheap because they’re mostly crap.

I’ll also echo what macado said. Hoi An is supposed to be the best bang for the money on tailoring, but I have no clothing from there so I can only recommend Saak.

SE Asia is the tailoring capital of the world it seems like. There’s someone trying to sell you a suit on every corner, and if you look hard enough you can actually find a quality tailor (Hoi An in Vietnam is the best for this IIRC) and get a well made suit, shirt and everything for under $80 USD.

If you want to pay more and get a good product, I use a slightly pricier tailor from Hong Kong whose shop is in one of the malls at Chit Lom. He was recommended to me by locals and does excellent work. Then again, if you want something cheap, there’s pretty much every Indian guy who yells SCUSE ME at you as you walk in front of their shop. Sometimes it’s fun to just grab a goofy looking, medium quality shirt or something for chump change. As mentioned above, the price varies based on quality of material and quality of the tailor his or herself (never seen a her, though).

This is the guy I use (Khun Saak), for what it’s worth:

There is a gazillion tailors in Bangkok itself, let alone Thailand. Personally, it’s best to go to one with a reputation to make good suits. Either go for one recommended here above or that your friends recommended you to. Most of the ones with the guys outside shouting to pull you in are crap. It’s better to enter ones with a good reputation. One of those being Crown tailors whom we use regularly. They are located on Sukhumvit soi 8. Sam should be able to help you out.
