What is Northern Laos like compared to Southern Laos?

Northern: rural, very mountainous, long windy roads and 8 hour bus rides. You actually may want to fly to Sam Neau and then work your way down, though you can do it on a sort of loop as well.
Southern: flatter and not as striking, but still some interesting stuff to see/do. Chill out at Si Phan Don (group of islands in the Mekong, near Cambodian border), see Wat Phu near Champasak, or take a 2-3 day motorcycle ride on the Bolaven Plateau (coffee plantations, waterfalls, etc).
I couldn’t really chose one over the other, both were pretty cool experiences.
