Tell me about dirt-biking in Thailand?

There’s a good chance I’m going to rent a dirtbike at some point, how easy is it to fill up the tank? Are there gas stations all over the place, or am I going to have to be very careful about where I get out to if I want to make it back? Do you think I should expect to have to haggle over gas prices (since it will probably be pretty obvious I need the gas) or are they standard and posted as I’m expecting?

I guess you plan to explore the countryside, right? I’ve never seen a dirtbike inside BKK - or at any of the beach resorts.

You should have no problem finding a gas station and they will be very familiar to you (proper pumps, price on display, etc).

Dirtbiking isn’t as common in Thailand, roads are generally pretty decent. The majority of bikes on the road are clutchless 4-speed manual 100-125c “commuter bikes” for city driving, with the occaisional bigger cruisers thrown in the mix. Cambodia is more known for dirtbiking, it has plenty of shitty roads/trails that make a CBR or Baja 250 a good idea. I don’t know how to ride one with a clutch, but planning on learning sometime in the next month or two.

Gas stations are pretty common, out in the sticks it’s generally a barrel of fuel they pump by hand. I’ve never been gouged on gas prices. It’s handy to carry a bottle or two of fuel with you if you’re going to be going far, as fuel gauges on rentals aren’t always as accurate as they should be. You can forget about getting a bike with a working spedometer.

Awesome post! I couldn’t have used better words . This is a area that is that I often think about and I thought you covered it flawlessly. I recently started keeping a blog as well but I’m not especiallycompetent at it yet. Would love to read more of your site and I’ll certainly revisit yet again!
